Company history
How everything began...
An energetic businessman with lots of ideas, an office building in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt warehouse district and the courage to view the world as his oyster: this was the start of a typical Hamburg company history – our company history.
Manfred Wolff
Not only a man with good business sense, but also a big fan of Asia, and in 1959 that's what gave him inspiration for an idea that laid the foundation-stone for the fashion brand Olsen. He began importing knitted pullovers from Hong Kong. “It was an exciting time”, he still says today, “The journey there took three days and it's an adventure many haven't undertaken.” Luckily he did and the adventure paid off - the pullover with the article number P31 became a star with sales of over one million.
In the following years Manfred Wollf and his team developed different collections that were sold without branding. Fashion became more and more important for his company.
In the late 80’s he gained the support of his own family when daughter Andrea and nephew Michael Wolff joined the company.
Andrea Wolff
At one point the Wolff family asked themselves: Why don't we create our own brand? We have enough ideas and a wealth of expertise in fashion. And so eventually the brand Olsen (named after an already existing sister company) hit the market in 1995.
The focus of every collection is knitwear. “Up to this day knitwear remains at the core of what Olsen does”, explains Andrea Wolff, who as an executive is responsible for the entire marketing department which she established in 1995.
“Everything began with knitwear. Meanwhile we have so much experience in this area that we can guarantee the best quality.”
Together with the marketing team Andrea Wolff developed the Olsen philosophy of friendship and emotional strength. Since the year 2000 testimonials gave this concept of friendship a face. Since 2010 the collections have not only been presented by models, but also by great, self-confident women whose radiation and biographies are stunning and unusual. As the range of products became bigger, Olsen became more known, more popular and more international.
Michael Wolff
A shareholder since 1989 and as an executive responsible for the whole sales and distribution department. He ensures that Olsen becomes more and more international. At the turn of the new millennium partner stores in major cities like Moscow, Toronto, Riga and Vienna were opened.
Today Olsen has 76 of its own stores and is distributed in over 3000 boutiques and fashion houses worldwide.
Olsen is already represented in 42 countries. Instead of four, now six big collections are presented yearly to its customers, all created by a 14 person strong design team.
Since 2009 Olsen fashion has been available online.
We and our 500 employees are proud to have created a modern, international brand with Olsen, which not only stands for style and trends, but also for trust and reliability. And we are curious to find out how our story together with you will go on.
